This is the first thing I've read by Denis Johnson, and although I liked the writing, I wasn't completely taken by the book. I realize that the life of a drug addict (or the past as remembered by a recovering drug addict) can consist of a collection of disconnected mini-stories, and I appreciate the book for depicting that, but it just wasn't enough for me to fully connect with and feel for the main character. Since the supporting characters were so briefly described and hardly remembered (again, I get that this is what it might be like for an addict), maybe I just needed, as I certainly desired, more time spent with the main character, to live his experiences more fully. It is for this reason, and the fact that I liked his writing style, that I would try one of Denis's full-length novels.
